Earlier this week, Edmonton Eskimos’ offensive line coach Jonathan Himebauch spoke about the SPF abilities of his offensive linemen, noting that he doesn’t need sunscreen when he’s working with his players.
Ed Philion, the Eskimos defensive line coach, is well on his way to being in the same well-shaded boat, with the arrival of Ernest Owusu. The six-foot-five, 270-pound Cal product was signed by the team on Friday morning. In four years with the Golden Bears, he had 55 tackles, 14 for a loss, eight sacks and a forced fumble.
Friday’s practice had the same suspects sitting out officially: Mike Miller, Desmond Marrow, Gord Hinse, Almondo Sewell and Willie Jefferson. Not on the list but not on the field were import receiver Akeem Foster, who hurt his ankle in practice on Thursday and running back John White. Rookie running back Tyler Thomas was busy in White’s absence, showing his explosiveness off to anyone who was watching.
Fred Stamps was active in practice on Friday, having left early the day before after a collision with a defensive back. He was running full speed, but wore sweatpants — probably on account of the cool 12-degree day here.
