Upon further review, the Canadian Football League has decided that Mike Reilly did take a headshot during the Edmonton Eskimos’ loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
The league sent out word Thursday morning that Brown’s fourth-quarter sack on Reilly, the Eskimos’ quarterback, was “an illegal and dangerous hit to the head.” Brown has been fined an undisclosed amount of money.
The Eskimos were trailing the Riders 30-27 with 1:27 to play when Reilly was sacked by Brown at his own 50-yard line. Brown’s helmet made contact with Reilly’s on the play and a second hit from Saskatchewan linebacker Craig Butler amplified the contact. Reilly fumbled the ball, Ricky Foley recovered it and the game was sealed.
Had the officiating crew caught the infraction, the fumble would have been nullified, the Eskimos would have gained 15 yards on the play and would have had a chance to win the game. Instead, the team saw its losing streak stretch to six games.
The Eskimos are in Calgary on Monday to face the 6-2 Stampeders in the Labour Day Classic.
