It rained on Tuesday. On Wednesday, it poured for the Edmonton Eskimos.
The team announced on its website this morning that cornerback Aaron Grymes is out indefinitely after an in-practice collision with his teammate, Donovan Alexander on Tuesday. Grymes has suffered an internal injury and is currently hospitalized and being monitored. The good news is that he won’t require surgery; the bad news is that on the field, Grymes was a solid contributor, making 12 tackles, five on special teams, and pulling in his first interception of the year on Aug. 2 against Hamilton.
If Tuesday’s practice was any indication of the Eskimos’ plans, Joe Burnett went from one corner in the secondary to the other to fill Grymes’ spot. Chris Rwabukamba, who filled in for Burnett the last two games while he was dealing with a hamstring issue, went back to Burnett’s re-vacated spot.
The loss of Grymes comes just a day after the team announced it has lost its starting middle linebacker, J.C. Sherritt indefinitely as well. Sherritt broke his thumb in the game against Hamilton and had surgery on it last week. He’s expected to be out from two to six weeks.
The Eskimos travel to Toronto this weekend to play the Argonauts on Sunday at Rogers Centre.
Esks add OL Tyrone Novikoff to practice roster, release Sweeney
After a quiet bye-week that saw zero personnel moves, the Eskimos added their fourth player in two days, by signing import offensive lineman Tyrone Novikoff. The six-foot-seven, 345-pound Idaho product started 25 of his 46-career games there, between 2008 and 2011.
To make room for Novikoff, the Eskimos parted ways with Isaiah Sweeney. The speedy receiver burst onto the team’s training camp and had a pair of strong preseason games but was dropped back to the practice roster in Week 4.
