Esks OL Cliff Louis fined, plus Week 3 CFL picks

Edmonton Eskimos offensive lineman Cliff Louis will be paying the piper.

The right tackle was fined by the Canadian Football League on Wednesday for what the league labeled a dangerous block on Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive lineman Eric Norwood during their game on Sunday in Guelph. After the whistle blew at 6:19 of the third quarter, Louis went after Norwood and tackled him at the knees, causing a minor altercation that was quickly broken up.

The league does not disclose fine amounts.

Here’s video of the hit, via Drew Edwards at The Scratching Post.

While the Eskimos have pushed their offensive line to be nasty this season, head coach Kavis Reed said that there are boundaries.

“It’s very important for your offensive line to play with an edge, but play within the rules,” he said before the fine was announced. “But play with an edge because when you play with an edge that comes with a little bit of a confidence, that’s a confidence builder.”

Louis wasn’t the only player called out by the league. Two Calgary Stampeders were fined, as O-lineman John Gott and Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive lineman Jermaine McElveen’s post-whistle altercation on Friday night. Calgary linebacker Juwan Simpson was also fine for a dangerous tackle on Riders’ receiver Weston Dressler.

A week after calling a home team sweep in Week 2, I’m flipping the script in Week 3.

Last week’s predictions worked out in half of the cases. Saskatchewan and B.C. won at home last week, but Winnipeg and Edmonton played spoiler in Montreal and Hamilton (in Guelph), respectively. This week, Week 3 in the CFL season, will be the week of the road warriors. My picks for the Calgary Herald are below. I’ll be back later this afternoon with a few stories from Wednesday’s Eskimos practice.

Season record: 6-2

Saskatchewan at Toronto — The Riders are rolling right now, with a pair of impressive wins on their resume already. The Argos are capable of a bounce back win, especially at home, but are the Riders ever really on the road? There’s no reason why this team can’t start 3-0 for the second year in a row. Saskatchewan

Calgary at Montreal — The fixation is on Drew Tate, but the Stamps are OK at quarterback whether it’s Tate or Kevin Glenn running the show. After a week of watching the Bombers’ defence get to Anthony Calvillo seven (!) times, Charleston Hughes might be too excited to sleep on Thursday night. Calgary

Winnipeg at Hamilton — Home Game No. 2 for the fans in Guelph features two teams that are a combined 1-3 and go out of their way to try and find ways to lose. The Ti-Cats missed Andy Fantuz last week and if Winnipeg’s defence has any momentum built from its win over Montreal, Henry Burris could experience deja-vu on Saturday. Winnipeg

B.C. at Edmonton — It’s the fuel of the kung-fu film industry and on Saturday, the teacher (Travis Lulay) takes on the student (Mike Reilly) in the student’s dojo. Experience, in terms of the QB, tailback Andrew Harris and the Lions’ defence (Lions’ defensive co-ordinator Rich Stubler vs. Eskimos head coach Kavis Reed is another teacher-student showdown) should allow the Lions to be swift like the wind, attack like fire, be solid like the mountain, etc. B.C.
