There was smoke around the Edmonton Eskimos’ defensive line this week and on Friday, the fire was linked to Jermaine Reid.

After trade rumours surfaced earlier this week about non-import defensive lineman Donny Oramasionwu, the Eskimos have traded Reid, a defensive end from Pickering, Ont. to the Toronto Argonauts along with two fifth-round picks in May’s Canadian Football League draft. Edmonton receives the Argos’ third-round pick in 2013.

“It has been a priority to reestablish ourselves in the draft,” Eskimos general manager Ed Hervey said in a press release. “At this point, we feel very good about our position.”

Reid spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons in Edmonton, playing in 25 games. He had 24 tackles and three quarterback sacks and missed the first half of the season while recovering from shoulder surgery. He played in seven games in 2012.

While still sitting outside of the first-round in this year’s draft, the Eskimos will open the second round, picking at 10th overall. They’re also picking 24th, 26th (added in Friday’s trade with Toronto), 31st and 51st. The CFL draft is on May 6 and will air at 10 a.m. MT on TSN.
