Round 1 will go to Matt Nichols.
The Edmonton Eskimos used Twitter on Thursday morning to announce that Matt Nichols will start at quarterback on Friday night against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Nichols has been battling with Mike Reilly for the starting QB job through the Eskimos’ training camp over the past two weeks. Both will play in the game and are expected to take an equal amount of reps.
Reilly should start next week against his former team when the Eskimos travel to Vancouver to play the B.C. Lions.
Eskimos head coach Kavis Reed has spoken this week about challenging Reilly and Nichols in camp to gauge who each player responds to pressure situations. In starting Edmonton’s first preseason Canadian Football League game, Nichols will have the opportunity to set the bar at the position. In B.C. next week, Reilly is set to go into a high-pressure situation as well.
Kickoff for Friday’s game is at 7 p.m. at Commonwealth Stadium.
