Coming off of an 18-10 playoff win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Sunday, three Edmonton Eskimos have been named Canadian Football League players of the week.
John White is the CFL’s top offensive player. The second-year running back had 19 carries for 134 yards in the Esks’ win in the West semifinal. The 23-year-old claims his second offensive player of the week award this year.
Kendial Lawrence’s 84-yard punt return touchdown was the only one the Eskimos scored on Sunday and that earned him special teams player of the week. It was his first punt-return TD, but his third this year on special teams. He ran two kickoffs back for majors in October, earning him special teams player of the month. He also had 52 yards on three kick returns and seven punt returns for a total of 104 yards on Sunday.
Defensive tackle Gregory Alexandre had two quarterback sacks on Sunday, part of a seven-sack outing for the Eskimos’ defence. For that he was named Canadian player of the week. It’s the 28-year-old Montreal native’s first player of the week nod.
The Eskimos get back on the field on Wednesday, ahead of their date with the Calgary Stampeders in Sunday’s West Division Final at McMahon Stadium. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to the 102nd Grey Cup in Vancouver.
